How Can a Mobility Scooter Benefit Your Life?

Posted by Cody Neer on

It is important for our well-being that we remain independent as we age. When having to deal with the inability to walk or limited mobility, great solutions include mobility scooters and power chairs.

Power Wheelchairs
With power wheelchairs, there are literally hundreds of features and combinations to choose from. From the drive control, tilt and recline amounts all the way to top speed. You will pay up to $15,000 for a well-equipped wheelchair.

Benefits of Electric Powered Wheelchairs

  • Both outdoor and indoor use
  • Great maneuverability
  • Durable and stable because of their heavy weight

Disadvantages of Electric Powered WheelchairsExpensive $2,300 to $15,000

  • Difficult to transport; too heavy for standard lifts

Mobility Scooters
Mobility, motor or power scooters fall into the following 4 categories. People have scooters for travelling, indoor and/or outdoor use.

Travel scooters - Known as compact scooters are made for quick and easy assembly and dismantling. They operate well on level paved surfaces both indoors and outdoors. These scooters are lightweight and are easy to transport on buses, trains and planes.

3 wheel scooters - 3 Wheel Scooters one front wheel and two rear wheels. They have a tight turning radius which makes them easy to move around corners and are ideal for indoor use. They also provide lots of leg room.

4 wheel scooters - 4 wheel scooters are more stable and give a smoother ride on uneven surfaces. They are better suited for the outdoors because of their large turning radius. When compared to 3 wheel scooters, 4 wheelers are more comfortable, can go faster and have better battery life.

Heavy duty scooters - These scooters are designed for people with large frames and can carry up to 500 pounds and come in 3 or 4 wheel models.

Advantages of Mobility Scooters

  • Have less of a stigma, more fun to operate and great psychological advantages
  • Great leg room
  • Great maneuverability and small turning radius.
  • Price range $1,200 to $5,000

Disadvantages of Mobility Scooters

  • Less versatile than wheelchairs; usually require more than one
  • Limited seating positions and other adjustments for comfort

These are some of the choices available for giving back mobility, freedom and independence.
